On April 14, a mobile missile launched at the Plesetsk space center in northwest Russia successfully hit the target thousands of miles away at the Kura test center in the Kamchatka peninsula.
RS-24 Yars is an advanced version of the Topol-M ballistic missile. It is the Russian Strategic Missile Forces' main stock in its impressive ICBM arsenal.
The state-run news agency RIA Novosti reported that the RS-24 Yars will be the primary weapon of choice for Russia's entire ground-based nuclear deterrence strategy, taking a lion's share or up to 80 percent of all ballistic missiles controlled by Russia's Strategic Missile Forces.
RS-24 Yars' NATO designation is SS-29. It has a range of 7,500 miles with the capability of carrying multiple independently-targetable nuclear warheads.
